Summer Graduate Student Fellows
California Cultures in Comparative Perspective
Graduate Student Fellowships
Summer 2009

The UCSD California Cultures in Comparative Perspective is once again pleased to announce a call for proposals for summer graduate student funding. These competitive fellowships will support graduate student research that focuses on questions relevant to California as a major nexus in global and diasporic processes, and that attends to hierarchical, comparative and relational processes inherent in this contemporary condition. This includes research on social movements, the military, boundaries, diverse community history and rapidly changing populations.  We are particularly interested in receiving proposals that focus on the geopolitical and more nuanced borders between the Americas, Asia and the Pacific, and those projects that highlight community-based collaborative research methodologies.

Past recipients of California Cultures fellowships are not eligible. All other currently enrolled UCSD graduate students in good academic standing in the Arts & Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions who have passed their qualifying exam (or completed their M.A. thesis if this is required in your PhD program) by the application deadline may apply for these fellowships. All fellowship awardees are expected to focus on research or writing, or both during the grant period.

Fellowship recipients will receive stipends of $3000, to be awarded for Summer 2009. At the beginning of the fall quarter, award recipients must submit a completed publishable paper or research report to the Director of California Cultures (depending upon whether the applicant’s main focus is on writing or research activities). Award recipients will also present their work at a California Cultures workshop in the 2009-2010 academic year.
